But before you separate for good, you want to try one last thing to see if there’s anything left to save.
You and your partner have always had an intensity about your relationship. Whenever you were in a good place your relationship was great. But it wasn’t so great when you weren’t doing well. In fact, it often turned into an explosion or complete neglect in one another.
You were able to balance the good times and the bad for a while, making up after fights and keeping your cool for some time after. But eventually, you spent more and more of your time and energy putting out fires than you did enjoying each other’s company.
Every once in a while, the conflicts got so intense that it was easier to walk away and disengage than it was to stand up for yourself and your relationship. Now, you’re spending time in separate rooms and choosing to engage with each other when it matters for the kids, your families, or your friends.
Lately, you don’t even bother to fight or yell. Lately, you just don’t care.
The apathy you and your partner have developed is harming the little that is left of your relationship. It’s getting harder to see past your pain and your pride well enough to try to fix things. And your defense mechanisms are preventing you from being vulnerable and admitting your faults in the chaos.
You wish that you could see past the blame you’ve placed on your partner and see how both of you contributed to the decline of your partnership. But you had no idea how hard it would be to actually face your hurt and open yourself up to being wounded again. You never predicted it would be easier to ignore your problems than face them head-on. And you certainly didn’t expect to be completely ready to walk away from the life you’d built.
Right now, you have hope that your relationship will get better so that you don’t have to walk away.
Distressed Couples Counseling is best for couples who know their relationship is unhealthy and are looking for ways to relate without being toxic. Emotionally Focused Therapy and the Gottman Method help couples break out of the negative patterns that prevent their relationships from growing and thriving.
You and your partner will benefit from Couples Therapy sessions if:
There are certain situations where you or your loved one might not be ready for Distressed Couples Therapy sessions with Urban Wellness. These situations include, but are not limited to:
Counseling for couples in distress is intended for couples in conflict who are coming to therapy as a last resort. Many couples find this counseling approach to be a great way to decide if their relationship is worth saving or if they would rather split amicably.
Distressed Couples Counseling sessions typically last 55 minutes. Therapy is best done with at least an 8-week commitment. We find that couples who cannot commit to at least 8 weekly sessions and meet less than weekly tend to have more difficulty in establishing a relationship with their therapist and often spend their sessions recapping the previous weeks instead of focusing on forward movement. After 8 weekly sessions, you, your partner, and your therapist can discuss the movement toward your treatment goals and whether reducing sessions to biweekly or terminating therapy is the next step.
During this initial session, you and your partner will meet with your therapist to define the counseling relationship and discuss the details of informed consent. Your therapist will gather information about both of your biological, psychological, and social histories and how these are impacting your current situation. You will also discuss the goals of therapy going forward together.
Together, in each subsequent session, your counselor will use evidenced-based models to treat the struggles you are experiencing to include the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy. Both of these techniques focus on helping you and your partner gain insight into yourself as individuals and the relationship as a whole.
Therapists at Urban Wellness focus on providing a safe space for you and your partner to explore the conflict within your relationship. During your work together, you and your partner will diffuse the constant fighting and strive to re-establish care and love for one another.
In your final sessions, you, your partner, and your counselor will review the treatment goals to ensure you are satisfied with your therapy experience and that the work with your therapist has met your expectations. You will also outline a plan going forward so that you are able to retain you have worked on together and implement all you have learned outside of session.
Counseling is a fee for service program and Urban Wellness accepts all major forms of payment.
Initial sessions cost $200 and each follow-up session costs $175 and we recommend at least an 8-week commitment.
Urban Wellness accepts insurance and offer in network and out of network benefits. We accept BCBS PPO, Humana, and United Healthcare insurances, at their contracted rates. For your convenience, we will do a benefit check on your behalf and notify you of our in network or out of network benefits. Copays, deductibles or any out of pocket costs are due at the time of service.
You are capable of getting out of bed and facing the day without panicking. It is possible to accept the unknown about your life and move forward while feeling like you will be ok even if something bad does happen. You will be able to experience new situations without feeling terrified that something will be out of your control.
