They used to be a sweet, caring kid, but lately, their behavior has you baffled and frustrated.
Your child has done a complete 180. They have gone from listening well to refusing to follow directions. They’re also getting in trouble and struggling to keep friends.
Testing limits is a part of growing up. But what you’re noticing in your child goes beyond a little attitude and sass.
When it comes to your kid, you’re starting to see they’re acting out in situations they used to thrive in. They often have outbursts rather than expressing themselves well and lately, it seems like they’re just plain out of control. All of the sudden your child is talking back, throwing tantrums, or just plain ignoring everything you have to say.
It’s almost as if you’re raising an entirely different kid.
The word today emphasizes high standards, and it’s hard to keep your child from feeling pressured to be a certain way. You know they have great qualities and great potential, but you can’t help but notice the ways they stand out from other children their age.
You’re not saying that your kid needs to behave like an angel all the time. Every child needs to practice handling their strong emotions. But you didn’t expect they’d flat out refuse to listen to anything you asked. Or that their inability to pay attention in school would have them falling behind or failing. And you certainly never imagined the outright meltdowns they’d have when they didn’t get their way.
Right now, your child’s behavior problems are starting to cause issues, and you’re wanting to intervene before they start to cause lasting damage.
Child Behavior Therapy at Urban Wellness is best for those who are 8 – 17 and looking to for ways to cope with their thoughts and emotions so they don’t behave in a negative way. Counseling helps your child process their experiences in a healthier way.
Your child will benefit from Behavior Therapy if:
There are certain situations where your child might not be ready for Counseling sessions with Urban Wellness. These situations include, but are not limited to:
If you are currently experiencing a severe mental illness, we recommend you seek outpatient services at a local program like Thresholds. If you are currently experiencing substance abuse or dependence, please see our other specialized service.
Behavioral Counseling for children and teens is meant to help your child build coping skills to be able to handle negative experiences and emotions. Together with a counselor, your child will strive to identify where their behavior issues come from, so they can work toward a more calm life. They will discover ways to keep their cool even when situations typically tend to make them act out.
Your child and their therapist will meet together weekly for 55-minute sessions. Therapy is best done with at least an 8-week commitment. We find that clients who cannot commit to at least 8 weekly sessions and meet less than weekly tend to have more difficulty in establishing a relationship with their therapist and often spend their sessions recapping the previous weeks instead of focusing on forward movement. After 8 weekly sessions, you and your therapist can discuss the movement toward your treatment goals and whether reducing sessions to biweekly or terminating therapy is the next step.
During this initial session, you and your child will meet with your therapist to define the counseling relationship and discuss the details of informed consent. Your therapist will gather information about your child and their biological, psychological, and social history and how this is impacting their current situation. You will also discuss the goals of therapy going forward together.
Together, in each subsequent session, your child’s counselor will give space for your child to be able to talk about their behavior, what it does for them, how it helps them, how it gets in the way. The counselor will use various strategies from DBT techniques, CBT, art therapy, sand tray therapy, homework (for kids AND parents), and games that promote healthy communication and emotional expression.
Therapists at Urban Wellness focus on providing a safe place for your child to process and discuss behavior issues and the consequences of acting out. During their work together, your child will learn skills to help them understand and communicate how poor behavior plays a role in their daily life and the best strategies to help them overcome it.
In your child’s final sessions, you, your child, and the therapist will review the treatment goals to ensure you are satisfied with your child’s counseling experience and that the work with your therapist has met your expectations. You will also outline a plan going forward so that your child is able to retain what they and their counselor have worked on together and implement all they have learned outside of session.
Counseling is a fee for service program and Urban Wellness accepts all major forms of payment.
Initial sessions cost $195 and each follow-up session costs $170 and we recommend at least an 8-week commitment.
Urban Wellness accepts insurance and offer in network and out of network benefits. We accept BCBS PPO, Humana, and United Healthcare insurances, at their contracted rates. For your convenience, we will do a benefit check on your behalf and notify you of our in network or out of network benefits.
