Angry Kids

You’ve noticed that your child is struggling with their anger.

You’ve tried talking and supporting them in different ways, but you’re not sure you’ve gotten to the root of the issue and you know you’re in need of some help.

Your child is smart and kind. They have a way of capturing the greatness in any moment and sharing it with the world. They’re also very giving and have one of the biggest hearts of anyone you’ve ever known. You truly believe they are capable of coming into their own.

Growing up is about finding your own path and identity. For some it’s easy and for others, it’s harder, but all kids go through growing pains and come out the other side.

But when it comes to your child, you’re starting to see they’re frustrated by some simple things. They often have outbursts rather than expressing themselves well and lately, it seems like they’re angry often. All of the sudden your child is talking back, throwing tantrums, or just plain ignoring everything you have to say.

The anger is becoming a more frequent part of their personality.

Kids grow up so fast today, and it’s hard to keep them from seeing or experiencing things that are emotionally heavy. Your child tries to cope with some of this negativity, but it seems like one of their first responses to something hard is to become angry.

You’re not trying to say that everyone else is the reason your child is hurting. All kids need to learn to regulate their responses to strong emotions. But you didn’t expect they’d have a hard time communicating their feelings calmly. Or that it would be easier to become physical rather than use their words. And you certainly never imagined your pleasant child becoming disrespectful.

Right now, your child’s anger is starting to cause problems, and you’re wanting to intervene before it becomes their normal way of life.

When You Come to Urban Wellness for Help for Your Angry Child

At Urban Wellness we believe childhood is a time for your child to safely explore themselves and their boundaries and to find their place in the world.

Who Benefits Most from Child Anger Management?

Child Anger Management at Urban Wellness is best for those who are 8 – 17 and looking to for ways to cope with their anger on a day-to-day basis. Counseling helps your child process their thoughts and feelings in a less irritated way, so they can feel more in control of the things that set them off.

Your child will benefit from Therapy for anger if:

There are certain situations where your child might not be ready for Counseling sessions with Urban Wellness. These situations include, but are not limited to:

If your child is experiencing a severe mental illness, we recommend you seek outpatient services at a local program like Thresholds. If they are currently experiencing substance abuse or dependence, please see our other specialized service.

What The Counseling Process Looks Like

Anger management for children and teens is meant to help your child build coping skills to be able to handle negative experiences and emotions. Together with a counselor, your child will strive to identify what causes their anger, so they can work toward a more soothing life. They will discover ways to feel more connected to friends and family even when situations make them mad.

Your child and their therapist will meet together weekly for 55-minute sessions. Therapy is best done with at least an 8-week commitment. We find that clients who cannot commit to at least 8 weekly sessions and meet less than weekly tend to have more difficulty in establishing a relationship with their therapist and often spend their sessions recapping the previous weeks instead of focusing on forward movement. After 8 weekly sessions, you and your therapist can discuss the movement toward your treatment goals and whether reducing sessions to biweekly or terminating therapy is the next step.

What Will You Pay for Counseling?
