Trauma

You’re ready to feel in control of your life again. To believe that no matter where you are, or what you’re doing, you are safe.

But ever since your traumatic event, you’ve felt like a different person. As if the world around you is a scary place and it’s difficult to find a sense of calm.

Before your traumatic event(s), you were a freer person. You lived in the moment and enjoyed life as it came.

You felt comfortable taking care of yourself. You never doubted your sense of the situation and believed you could handle anything that came your way. Yet, when your trauma happened your world changed. You started to question yourself.

So here you are, some time later, and you’re starting to wonder if you’re ever going to feel like yourself again.

Every day is stressful. You either feel numb about what happened to you or feel in a constant state of hyper arousal.

You know your trauma is serious and that it takes time to overcome something like this. But you don’t want to be terrified for the rest of your life. Rather, you want to feel in control of your life again and to trust yourself.

What you didn’t expect the amount of time it would take for you to feel normal. That just when you thought you were starting to get better, something small would trigger your trauma and you’d feel like you were back at the beginning again.

You’re getting through the day-to-day and you’re beginning to trust yourself again, but you know you still have some work to do.

When You Seek Trauma Counseling with Urban Wellness

Who Benefits Most from Trauma Therapy?

Trauma Counseling is best for those who understand that a significant event in their life is negatively impacting them. Trauma Counseling helps you understand the complexity of your experience and address it so you can start to heal.

You will benefit from Trauma Focused therapy sessions if:

There are certain situations where you might not be ready for counseling sessions with Urban Wellness. These situations include, but are not limited to:

If you are currently experiencing a severe mental illness, we recommend you seek outpatient services at a local program like Thresholds. If you are currently experiencing substance abuse or dependence, please see our other specialized service.

What The Trauma Counseling Process Looks Like

Trauma Counseling is meant to help you face the memories and physiological responses of what happened to you and develop the skills to keep them from impacting you in a negative way. Together, you and your therapist will strive to reduce your irritability, anxiety, and isolation and improve your ability to live a happier life. You will discover ways to regain ownership of your daily tasks and complete them without feeling weighed down by your past.

You and your therapist will meet together weekly for 55-minute sessions. Therapy is best done with at least an 8-week commitment. We find that clients who cannot commit to at least 8 weekly sessions and meet less than weekly tend to have more difficulty in establishing a relationship with their therapist and often spend their sessions recapping the previous weeks instead of focusing on forward movement. After 8 weekly sessions, you and your therapist can discuss the movement toward your treatment goals and whether reducing sessions to biweekly or terminating therapy is the next step
