“As human beings, our job in life is to help people realize how rare and valuable each one of us really is, that each of us has something that no one else has or ever will have something inside that is unique to all time. It’s our job to encourage each other to discover that uniqueness and to provide ways of developing its expression.” –Fred Rogers

Who Am I?

Hi! I’m Megan Burns (she/hers). I’m a therapist that works with kids, teens, adults, parents and families from diverse backgrounds. I’ve worked in a variety of settings helping children and families overcome complex trauma, improve their well-being and strengthen their relationships. I’m honored to bear witness to others’ stories and work together to make feelings and behaviors feel less overwhelming and more manageable. I’m a cis-gendered, white woman.

I love working with:

  • Kids, teens and grown-ups dealing with big feelings;
  • Individuals who have experienced trauma and loss;
  • Kids and teens who need support in navigating and regulating emotions and behaviors;
  • Adults who feel stuck or out of sorts and are open to exploring what’s happening and why

Some of my favorite approaches include:

My approach is strengths-based and person-centered. Context and relationships are important. Therapy should not be one size fits all and we will work together to tailor therapy to be personalized to you and meet your needs.

HOW I HELP

The therapeutic relationship that we will create together will allow you to bring in your whole self to sessions that feel comfortable and safe. By getting to know each other and explore your feelings, thoughts, behaviors and whatever’s on your mind, we can explore patterns and make connections. Through greater awareness of what’s happening inside, we can notice where and how that’s impacting your daily life to make change. I will help you learn and practice new ways to deal with and manage feelings so when things happen (and they always do), you’ll feel prepared, more in control and better able to manage.

I Believe:

in the power of the relationship between therapist and client and its ability to bring hope and healing; everyone’s voice is important and matters; change is possible

What it’s like in a session with me

One of my biggest goals is making you feel safe and comfortable. We will create a space where you can bring your good, not so good and everything in between. Therapy is such a different experience for everyone and it’s so important to make the experience yours. I will meet you where you are at, and we will go from there. For child clients, sessions involve a mix of play and talking. Play is such an important language for children and we will use this as an avenue to make change. I collaborate with caregivers and important grown-ups to work as a team to help your child.

More about me

I am a mom of twins who keep me busy and love to play. I enjoy traveling and going on adventures with my kids and partner. I am an avid reader/audiobook listener. I enjoy exploring Chicagoland in search of the best sweet treats, especially donuts.
