Hello! I am Fariha Newaz (Fah-ree-ha, she/her/hers)

Hi! I am Fariha (Fah-ree-ah, she/hers) and am a therapist who works with teens and adults. Come with me on this wild adventure through therapy that explores shame, boundaries (what are those?!), and how your emotions impact every aspect of your life. Let’s look at patterns, challenge belief systems, learn about how our intergenerational trauma shapes us, and create new narratives. I live for plot twists and the latest news in your life. Yes, show me the receipts, and of course, I want to see the texts. We start where you are, and only by getting to know the most real version of you can we navigate the therapy world. And we do it together to celebrate your wins, big and small! I am a CIS gendered, first-generation, South Asian woman.

I love working with:

  • Teens with anxiety, depression, and substance use
  • Young adults struggling with life’s transitions
  • Adults just trying to get through the day
  • Parents dealing with well…parenting
  • Children of Immigrants/ first generation
  • South Asian identifying clients
  • People pleasing, boundary setting, and inner child wounds

Some of my approaches include:

CBT, just talking it out, motivational interviewing, asking hard-hitting questions, exploring shame through Brene Brown’s work, identifying much-needed boundaries, and respectfully challenging your thinking patterns. I also love values exploration/ alignment, internal conflict, pattern recognition, and how these things impact your life. I like to grab relevant strategies from a variety of approaches because I know therapy is not one size fits all.

HOW I HELP

The relationship between us is going to be the strongest tool we have. I believe that you have the power and strength to grow and change from within. I believe in radical candor, which means to care deeply but challenge directly. Meeting with me should feel like hanging out with a trusted friend, but one who isn’t trying to tell you what to do. Your most authentic self is what I ask of you, and I know it can take some time to get there; that’s okay. The goal isn’t that hard things won’t happen, but that when they do, you have the skills to work through them. Trust the process and we will figure it out together. We are two people exploring the human experience, working towards your healing. I also practice from an anti-racism and anti-oppressive lens. Oh, and we will laugh, because laughter is medicine.

What it’s like in session with me

First things first, I will *always* have a blanket in session, I am always cold, even in the summer. Bring your coffee, take your shoes off, do whatever you need to do to get comfortable. It should always feel like a conversation. Sometimes we will go off course and talk about random things, but we don’t worry, we will come back. Sometimes you won’t even know you got hit with some therapy. I want the session to be as comfortable as possible because it’s easier to grow when we feel comfortable with ourselves and each other. If you are looking for a blank slate therapist, I am not it. My face will be facing. My favorite moments in therapy are when my clients say “I cannot wait for your face when I tell you…”

I believe our identities, culture, and background are integral to the therapy space. I believe that healing is layered and complex; it is a lifelong journey that looks more like a roller coaster. I believe discomfort is a sign of growth. I believe in laughter. I believe in the power of storytelling as a way to connect. I believe therapy is political and in collective liberation.

More about me

Outside of work, I love to travel, dance, read, eat, hang out with my friends, and partner, but mostly I am hanging out with my 4.5-year-old kiddo. Parenting is so hard, I am tired, ya’ll! I know lots of random movie and tv show trivia. I love Harry Potter, but detest the author. My ideal day is when I can laugh and be in direct sunlight! I’m moving towards what fills my cup and leaving the rest of it. The 4th decade is a whole new adventure! I’m just here to live my life trying to do ALL THE THINGS. Hope to meet you soon!
