Hello, I am Evann Scharer, a compassionate and dedicated licensed professional counselor who is here to support individuals on their journey towards healing and personal growth. With expertise in addressing a wide range of issues with children, adolescents, and adults, I provide a safe and non-judgmental space for clients to explore their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. I am committed to tailoring my approach to meet the needs of each person I work with, taking into consideration their unique individuality.
Children as young as 4 years old who are experiencing challenges including depression, anxiety, ADHD, anger management, eating disorders, grief, and self-esteem issues. I believe that early intervention and support can make a significant impact on young individuals’ emotional well-being and overall development. I also love working with adolescents and young adults to provide guidance, support, and effective therapeutic interventions for challenges or life changes they may be facing. Adults are a new area of interest for me and I look forward to utilizing my skills to create a safe and encouraging environment in which we can collaborate to gain the most out of the therapeutic process. I am a LGBTQIA+ friendly counselor who welcomes individuals from all sexual orientations and gender identities. I am also experienced in working with individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. I strongly believe in promoting inclusivity and creating a safe space for clients of all ethnicities, races, and cultural backgrounds.
My counseling approach is informed by several therapeutic theories, including Adlerian theory, positive psychology, feminist theory, narrative therapy, and client-focused theory. By integrating these frameworks, I aim to empower clients, promote their strengths, and guide them towards achieving their goals. I utilize a range of evidence-based interventions tailored to each client’s unique needs. For children, I employ play therapy as it can be an effective tool for self-expression and emotional exploration. I also incorporate mindfulness and self-reflection skills to help clients develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their experiences.
I want to meet you where you are at, wherever that may be. Creating a strong therapeutic relationship will be crucial in ensuring you feel comfortable in session and are able to grow and learn throughout the process of therapy. Creating a meaningful relationship may take some time which is also why being consistent and open is highly encouraged. My approach is multicultural, anti-racist, and socially just, ensuring a safe space for exploration and growth. Together we will talk through your recent experiences, what is challenging in your life, how you are coping, and how to increase whatever makes you happier in your life. When you are meeting with me you will be encouraged to utilize your right to share, explore your thoughts and emotions, and be heard. Throughout the therapeutic process you will gain confidence in yourself and in your ability to lead the life you deserve and are capable of creating for yourself.
I believe every individual is unique and therefore each session and therapeutic process will look different.
Everyone has a voice that deserves to be heard, inside and outside of session.
You cannot fully love and care for others if you do not fully love and care for yourself first.
In our sessions, you will have a relaxed and open space to explore yourself and your life experiences freely. At times I might encourage you to dive deeper, however there are no wrong answers when it comes to how you would like to change and grow throughout this process. I love to take a narrative approach that relies on story telling and emphasizes the fact that you are the person who is in control of writing your life story. I take a holistic and lifestyle-based approach, recognizing the interconnectedness of mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Together, we will work on creating personal wellness goals, increasing self-confidence, and addressing thought patterns, emotions, and behaviors in everyday life. Together, we can navigate life’s challenges, promote resilience, and foster personal growth. Most importantly, I want to aid you in feeling comfortable in our sessions which can look like playing games, talking about what you have been enjoying doing recently, or not talking much at all if you do not feel up to it that day.
I was born and raised in the midwest and moved to Chicago about three years ago to start my Masters degree program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Adler University during which I worked as a server in a restaurant. I love learning and taking on new hobbies whenever I can. My favorite hobbies right now include going on walks, crocheting, scrapbooking, cooking, and caring for plants. I love reading and usually go for non-fiction books that relate to a culture or idea I would like to learn more about or fiction books that allow me to learn about a life or story that is different from my own. When I have a little more time I really love to get together with my friends and go to the lake or have a movie night. I also really enjoy travelling and hope to see many different countries and continents throughout my life as well as experience many different cultures.
