Who Am I?

Hi there! My name is Mayra (pronounced “My-Rah”; she/her). I am a therapist who works with teens and adults. I am the proud eldest daughter of Mexican immigrants, and my journey to becoming a therapist was not an easy one. It is deeply intertwined with who I am as a person and has shaped the way I connect with others.

I am honored to work with wonderful people who are curious and willing to learn, self-reflect, and cultivate unconditional self-love. I invite you to join me on this journey toward healing, where you are the captain and I am here to support you as we navigate obstacles, challenge beliefs that no longer serve you, understand your triggers, and find greater regulation and balance within yourself.

I believe healing begins with curiosity, compassion, and willingness. Together, we can explore not only your personal experiences, but also how family, culture, social constructs, and the systems around us have shaped the way you see yourself and the world.

I love working with:

  • Teens with anxiety, depression, ADHD, and autism with lower support needs.
  • Children of immigrants and first-generation individuals
  • Mi gente Latina! As well as other people of color looking for a brave and culturally affirming space.
  • People exploring their identity and struggling to adapt to confusing transitioning phases in life
  • Any person who has ever been unsolicitedly given the “caretaker” or “therapist friend” title

Some of my favorite approaches include:

Together we will be curious about that little voice in your head through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational interviewing (MI) , Dialectal Behavior Therapy (DBT). While I recognize and value the power of talk therapy I do also like to incorporate mindfulness and somatic approaches. We will not be over-analyzing and intellectualizing every single emotion, thought, or “shameful” moment. Rather we will be working together to truly feel, process, and live through all of life’s experiences. I believe that every person’s journey toward healing is unique and I like to treat each as such.

HOW I HELP

I have made it my goal to create a brave and non-judgemental space for every person to feel empowered and capable of being vulnerable. As a therapist and social worker I do my best to abide by the social work core values; service, social justice, dignity and worth of a person, importance of human relationships, integrity, competence, and advocacy. Though I may not be a “yes man” I CAN promise to challenge you compassionately, and be by your side through your successes, and hardships. I strive for our therapeutic relationship to serve you as an example of a secure attachment by holding healthy professional boundaries, practicing open and honest communication, and adding emotional regulation skills to your toolbox.

Beliefs section

I believe that while our personal decisions and lived experiences have shaped who we are today, it is important to acknowledge the ways that larger systems have influenced our lives. I believe that our identities are ever-changing and that healing is nonlinear. Most importantly, I believe that there is nothing inherently wrong with you. You are worthy of healing, love, belonging, and compassion exactly as you are.

What it’s like in a session with me

In our therapy space, there is absolutely no requirement or expectation for how you show up. Whether you’re having the best week of your life or everything feels like it’s falling apart, you are warmly welcome exactly as you are. You are encouraged to make yourself comfortable during our sessions. Come in your PJs, slippers, bring your favorite blanket or plushie, wear your favorite outfit. Come in laughing, excited, or crying, this is your space.

I will follow your lead and meet you where you are while also keeping your therapeutic goals in mind and helping you identify the steps and boundaries you want to practice outside of therapy. I am your willing companion, and everything will happen at your pace.

Some sessions may involve learning and practicing coping skills. Others may focus on processing emotions, exploring relationships, challenging beliefs that no longer serve you, or simply making sense of what the heck is going on in your life right now. You might experience the whole spectrum of emotions in this space, and I hope you leave each session feeling heard, supported, and more connected to yourself than when you first walked in.

More about me

Outside of work, I love lifting, hiking, traveling, journaling, listening to podcasts and music, trying new foods, reading (fantasy, of course!), learning about different cultures, and dancing. I’m also a self-proclaimed coffee and tea-holic, and I show off my AMC A-List membership any chance I get.

If we ever have a virtual session, you might get lucky and catch a glimpse of my two kitties, Nala and Simba, making a surprise appearance in the background, jiji. My guilty pleasures are anything creepy, spooky, spiritual, or mysterious (yes, Halloween is my favorite holiday, right after my birthday, of course!). So please bring all your weirdness with you. I love meeting people with unique interests and learning about all the things that make you, you!
