Welcome! My name is Madalyn (aka Maddi or sometimes Mads) and I am a Licensed Social
Worker who works with children, adolescents, and adults. As a Queer identifying woman of color in mental health, I hope to bring more visibility and awareness to BIPOC communities and their mental health needs. I believe that our identities play an integral role in our mental health and how we interact with the world, as well as how the world interacts with us. I strive to create a safe space for you as you take this brave first step and look forward to helping you in your healing journey!
I do believe in the power of words so I employ traditional talk therapy, CBT, psychodynamic practices, person-centered therapy, and mindfulness. Overall, I do not believe in therapy in the traditional sense because no one size fits all. I want this to be not only a safe space, but YOUR safe space, so even if I’m not experienced in a particular modality, if you’re interested in it let’s learn about it together! For those who may find it hard to put words to everything, I practice art therapy which incorporates taking apart and piecing together what emotions may look to you.
As a growing social worker, providing therapy is to create a therapeutic relationship between the clinician and the client. It is to say, I am your advocate. In this space, all thoughts and feelings are not shamed but rather welcomed although uncomfortable in order to make windows to authenticity. The therapeutic process may be messy, may not be a traditional setting, but rather a journey with twists and turns. However challenging the process may be, my role is to ensure that you are not alone. We will navigate together. There will be times when I challenge certain
thoughts and there may be times when I encourage you to press further into yourself. All is for the purpose of growth and acceptance. In the therapeutic setting I am able to recognize that I am not the expert. Rather the client is the expert of their own experiences and my role is to encourage self-determination through providing a supportive and a safe environment to do so.
I believe that our identities, culture, and background are integral to the therapy space. I believe that healing is not linear, it is a lifelong journey that goes through phases, and stages and there is no one way to do it.
I like to make clients feel comfortable and create a space that doesn’t feel intimidating. I will show up as my honest self and hope that you do too! I am a very silly person who sometimes
does not take herself too seriously so I hope that lifts some pressure off. Therapy can be fun! I encourage you to get comfy when we meet in-person, so feel free to take your shoes off, or bring
in a delicious beverage. If we’re online I encourage you to find a private, safe, and comfortable space. While there is no set agenda each session, we do establish goals at the start of our journey together and those goals guide us. I encourage clients to take control and direct where we start because I believe you are the expert on you.
Outside of work I am a nature person who enjoys hiking, biking and exploring new trails. I cannot survive without coffee so I am always looking for new coffee shops to read at! I am originally from Maryland and love exploring new neighborhoods in the city. On a gloomy day, I love sitting inside with a nice book or going to the movies! I’m a big cat person and love my two fur babies with all my heart. Also a big foodie who loves to cook fresh, homemade meals and an avid farmers market attendee ;)
