Non-Monogamy in a Clinical Setting: An Anti-Oppressive Perspective

Presented by: Nick French, LMFT

Completion of this course earns 1 CE hour.

If you look up a definition of Non-monogamy, you will find many different definitions, which is fitting given the amount of flexibility afforded to non-monogamy. Essentially, everyone who engages in non-monogamy has the ability to shape the experience as they see fit, provided it’s done in a socially responsible way. One definition states: “Non-monogamy refers to the practice of engaging in emotional, sexual, platonic, and other varied forms of relationships with more than one person, either simultaneously or over time, with the knowledge and consent of all involved parties.” (Haupert, M. L., et al, 2017).

In this workshop, Nick French, LMFT will help us understand the basics of non-monogamy, challenge us to broaden our views of the practice, and increase our confidence and ability to work with clients engaging in non-monogamy.

Learning Objectives:

  • To increase our understanding of the basic concepts of non-monogamy
  • To identify the misconceptions and oppressive views about non-monogamy
  • To understand ways to engage your individual and couple’s therapy clients on topics related to non-monogamy
  • To improve your confidence level in terms of supporting a client that identifies as non-monogamous or is curious about it and is seeking support navigating the complexities of that world.
