GET TO KNOW your therapist

Kayla Mason, LCSW

Hello! My name is Kayla Mason.

My official job title here at Urban Wellness is Therapist, but I’m also known as an emotion coach, relationship guide, and expert story listener. I work with individuals at every stage of life who are feeling stuck in a negative cycle and want to regain a sense of control and balance in their lives.

There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.

I believe in partnering with you by using an integrative approach that shapes the treatment around your goals and needs. What that means is that while I may bring a set of skills and areas of expertise to the table, I trust you to be the expert on you and take the lead in this process. I hope to provide a safe, non-judgmental space for you to share your story and experience the growth you are looking for.

I work with kids and teens to build their emotional intelligence so that they can better process their internal world, learn to manage big feelings, and more effectively communicate with the adults in their lives. Kids that come to therapy often lack the ability to make sense of and verbalize what they’re thinking and feeling inside–so they act it out instead. I provide support and guidance to parents to help them become more attuned and respond to their child’s unique needs. I help kids and teens give words to their felt experiences and find healthier ways to express this to others.

Humans are relational beings and we often feel distressed when an important relationship is out of balance. Whether it’s relationship with self, relationship with a child, or relationship with a significant other, I help guide you in building stronger connections. When this takes the form of couples therapy, I like to utilize the Gottman approach to give couples the tools they need to work through relational challenges while continuing to build on the strengths that already exist in the relationship.

You may be 5 or you may be 50. Regardless of years spent on this earth, everyone has a story to tell. I believe everyone deserves to be seen and heard. I allow people tell their stories in a way that helps them to feel understood. When it comes to those who have experienced trauma, therapy can be a safe place to explore your narrative or even open up about parts of your story that you have never shared before.

Outside of my therapist office, I’m usually busy adventuring with my family, looking for my next upcycle project, or working on my garden.  Unfortunately, since Chicago weather doesn’t allow me to enjoy the great outdoors year round, you can find me in full hibernation mode in the winter, catching up on all my favorite TV shows and movies!
