Who Am I?

Hi! My name is Kat Cockey.

I am both a licensed therapist and art therapist who works with preteens, teens, and adults! My goal is to provide clients a chance to feel heard and offer a supportive and safe environment in which they can truly express themselves. Taking the first step to seek help isn’t easy, I am glad that you are here! My pronouns are she/they and I am a CIS gendered white female.

I love working with:

  • Individuals who are struggling with anxiety, depression, and difficulty managing anger.
  • Individuals who have experienced traumatic events.
  • Individuals struggling with life transitions – this can include changing identities and roles, shifting careers, going to college, etc. I am here to support you in your journey!

Some of my favorite approaches include:

I am trained in CBT, DBT, ACT, motivational interviewing, and EMDR; however, I practice from an integrative approach as I believe that therapy is not one size fits all. I utilize my skillsets to tailor our time together to meet you where you are at!

I believe that the cornerstone to an effective therapeutic treatment is a strong and trusting relationship that is created through the establishment of a safe, collaborative, and non-judgmental space. Healing and growth are both difficult journeys and nobody’s journey is the same. Together we can work to help you access your strengths, establish safe boundaries, explore different directions in life, heal from trauma and instill confidence in your decision making. I am simply here to be a part of your support system and to offer guidance through any path you choose to take in life. I am here to listen – you dictate what we talk about, when we talk about it, and how we approach it.

What it’s like in a session with me

I want the space to feel safe and comfortable for you – this is your time, I want to make sure that you get out of it what you need every hour that we spend together! If you need to take off your shoes, bring a well-loved personal object with you, bring some coffee, snag one of our blankets, or put your feet up on the couch to feel your best in session – do it! I believe that humor and discussion of your favorite things have a space in therapy – it is likely that we will laugh together and I will absolutely watch or listen to any of your recommendations so that we can talk about them together. I want you to feel comfortable in the space and with me – it is easier to be our authentic selves when we feel safe and secure with each other and in our environment.

More about me

Outside of work, I enjoy being around my friends and family, going on road trips and traveling when I can, reading and catching up on shows, going to yoga classes, taking care of my plants, and just being outside. My ideal day involves grabbing coffee at a local shop, walking around the various Chicago neighborhoods for a few hours, and hanging out with a loved one. I love to laugh, exist in the moment, and experience new places! I hope to meet you soon!
