You’re heartbroken by what’s happened to your child.

You know that you need to support your child through their trauma, but you’re not sure you’re quite equipped to help in every way they need.

Your family is loving and supportive. You truly care about each other’s well-being and everyone makes an effort to love one another. You embrace everyone for who they are and what they’ve experienced and you really try to honor everyone’s truth.

But ever since your child’s traumatic event, you feel like you have no idea what you’re doing. You’re at a loss for the best ways to help them through their pain and you’re scared they’re going to be scarred for life.

You don’t doubt your ability to be a loving and supportive parent. But when it comes to your child, you’re starting to see the impact their trauma is having on their life. They often choose to be alone rather than interact with friends and family. And they don’t seem to be as present or shine as bright as they used to.

The trauma seems to really have changed them.

Safety and security are so important for growing kids, and it’s painful to believe that your child has already experienced what it’s like to be without both.

You don’t believe that their life is changed forever. But you do admit they might need more help coping with their circumstances than you can give. All you want is for your fun-loving child to feel stable enough to truly be themselves.

Right now, your child’s trauma is interrupting their happiness, and you’re wanting to intervene before it becomes their normal way of life.

Who Benefits Most from Child Trauma Therapy?

Child Trauma Counseling at Urban Wellness is best for those who are 8 – 17 and looking to for ways to cope with their trauma on a day-to-day basis. Counseling helps your child process their thoughts and feelings in a less anxious way, so they can feel more in control of the things that set them off.

Your child will benefit from Trauma Therapy if:

  • They are withdrawing from friends and circumstances they used to enjoy
  • They go out of their way to avoid people, places, or objects
  • They express not feeling safe or secure
  • They constantly worry about the future and what’s going to happen

There are certain situations where your child might not be ready for Counseling sessions with Urban Wellness. These situations include, but are not limited to:

  • Instances of severe mental illness
  • Ongoing substance abuse

If your child is experiencing a severe mental illness, we recommend you seek outpatient services at a local program like Thresholds. If they are currently experiencing substance abuse or dependence, please see our other specialized service.

What The Counseling Process Looks Like

Trauma Counseling for children and teens is meant to help your child build coping skills to be able to handle negative experiences and emotions. Together with a counselor, your child will strive to identify safety and stability in the world around them so they can move past things that trigger their trauma. They will discover ways to feel more connected to friends and family even when situations scare them or cause them anxiety.

Your child and their therapist will meet together weekly for 55-minute sessions. Therapy is best done with at least an 8-week commitment. We find that clients who cannot commit to at least 8 weekly sessions and meet less than weekly tend to have more difficulty in establishing a relationship with their therapist and often spend their sessions recapping the previous weeks instead of focusing on forward movement. After 8 weekly sessions, you and your therapist can discuss the movement toward your treatment goals and whether reducing sessions to biweekly or terminating therapy is the next step.

Here’s what to expect:

WEEK ONE: Intake

During this initial session, you and your child will meet with your therapist to define the counseling relationship and discuss the details of informed consent. Your therapist will gather information about your child and their biological, psychological, and social history and how this is impacting their current situation. You will also discuss the goals of therapy going forward together.

WEEK TWO and Beyond: Counseling for Children

Together, in each subsequent session, your child’s counselor will give space for your child to be able to talk about their trauma, how it impacts them, and how it holds them back. The counselor will use various strategies from DBT techniques, CBT, art therapy, sand tray therapy, homework (for kids AND parents), and games that promote healthy communication and emotional expression.

Therapists at Urban Wellness focus on providing a safe place for your child to process and discuss the traumatic events they’ve been through. During their work together, your child will learn skills to help them understand and communicate how trauma plays a role in their daily life and the best strategies to help them overcome it.

TERMINATION: 1-2 Final Sessions

In your child’s final sessions, you, your child, and the therapist will review the treatment goals to ensure you are satisfied with your child’s counseling experience and that the work with your therapist has met your expectations. You will also outline a plan going forward so that your child is able to retain what they and their counselor have worked on together and implement all they have learned outside of session.
