You’ve noticed that your child is anxious and that it is getting in the way of living a happy life.

You’re watching them struggle with their anxiety and you’re ready to find support.

Getting good grades, building friendships, testing limits, and breaking boundaries are all part of a happy, healthy childhood and you’re ready for all of the joys and challenges that raising your child brings.

But you’re starting to notice your child’s light dim in certain situations. They’re afraid to try new things and worry a lot about being good and doing the right thing. They are getting caught up in a cycle of worried behavior. Suddenly, their life went from happy to just trying to get through the day without feeling anxious.

The anxiety seems to be changing their personality.

There is so much pressure on kids today that it is hard to slow down and have a childhood. Your child tries to do their best, but it feels like every time they make an effort they are worried whether or not they will succeed.

Every kid has to face uncertainty and learn to deal with the anxiety and ambiguity that life throws us. But you didn’t expect they’d have difficulty making friends and keeping them. You never thought your child would struggle at school, and you certainly didn’t expect them to feel bad about themselves because they thought they weren’t perfect.

So far, your child’s anxiety has been manageable, but you don’t want it to become something that holds them back from reaching their full potential.

When You Seek Counseling for Your Anxious Child

  • Your child will discover how powerful they are when they learn to overcome the root causes of their anxiety.
  • Your child will get in touch with what instances trigger their anxiety, so they can develop coping strategies to address them.
  • Your child will sail through their day to day obligations without feeling worried or nervous about what is required of them
  • Your child will be able to conquer their tendencies toward perfection and be able to accept themselves and their accomplishments without embarrassment.
  • Your child will develop the skills to calm themselves when their anxiety does surface so that they are able to get back to the things in life they enjoy.

Who Benefits Most from Child Therapy?

Counseling for children is best for those who are 8 – 17 and looking to for ways to cope with their anxiety on a day-to-day basis. Counseling helps your child process their thoughts and feelings in a less frazzled way, so they can feel more in control of the things that cause them worry.

Your child will benefit from Therapy sessions if:

  • They struggle to pay attention or listen at school
  • They spend hours on simple tasks for fear of not doing them perfectly
  • They refuse to meet new people or go new places because they are uncomfortable with unfamiliar surroundings
  • They have big dreams and aspirations but says their anxiety will never let them make them happen

There are certain situations where your child might not be ready for counseling sessions with Urban Wellness. These situations include, but are not limited to:

  • Instances of severe mental illness
  • Ongoing substance abuse

If your child is experiencing a severe mental illness, we recommend you seek outpatient services at a local program like Thresholds. If your child is currently experiencing substance abuse or dependence, please see our other specialized service.

What The Counseling Process for Children Looks Like

Therapy for children and teens is meant to help your child identify the areas of their life that are impacted by their anxiety. Together with a counselor, your child will strive to regulate their emotions and learn what triggers their anxiety, so they can establish a sense of predictability in their life. They will discover ways to label what causes them to worry and control their responses to it.

Your child and their therapist will meet together weekly for 55-minute sessions. Therapy is best done with at least an 8-week commitment. We find that clients who cannot commit to at least 8 weekly sessions and meet less than weekly tend to have more difficulty in establishing a relationship with their therapist and often spend their sessions recapping the previous weeks instead of focusing on forward movement. After 8 weekly sessions, you and your therapist can discuss the movement toward your treatment goals and whether reducing sessions to biweekly or terminating therapy is the next step.

Here’s what to expect:

WEEK ONE: Intake

During this initial session, you and your child will meet with your therapist to define the counseling relationship and discuss the details of informed consent. Your therapist will gather information about your child and their biological, psychological, and social history and how this is impacting their current situation. You will also discuss the goals of therapy going forward together.

WEEK TWO and Beyond: Counseling for Children

Together, in each subsequent session, your child and their counselor will use evidenced-based therapy to treat the struggles you are experiencing. In therapy, your counselor will use a combination of art therapy, movement, sand tray therapy, play therapy, CBT/DBT techniques, and homework to ensure the sessions are meeting your child’s unique needs.

Therapists at Urban Wellness focus on providing a safe space for your child to process and discuss anxiety and the consequences of living with constant worry. During their work together, your child will learn skills to help them understand and communicate how anxiety plays a role in their daily life and the best strategies to help them overcome it.

TERMINATION: 1-2 Final Sessions

In your child’s final sessions, you, your child, and the therapist will review the treatment goals to ensure you are satisfied with your child’s counseling experience and that the work with your therapist has met your expectations. You will also outline a plan going forward so that your child is able to retain what they and their counselor have worked on together and implement all they have learned outside of session.
