Sometimes there’s nowhere for your anger to go but out. Out into the world through your words or your actions and into the lives of those you love.

You weren’t always an angry person. You were easy to approach, happy, and had great connections with those you were close to.

You weren’t always reactive. There was a period of time where you were able to manage your anger. Yet, somewhere along the way, all the little things started to nag at you. You saw how much of your life was beyond your control and when one thing after another went wrong, you couldn’t find a way to express yourself without being furious.

So today you find yourself always on edge, living life in agitation.

More often than not your day starts one way and ends in frustration. You’re annoyed with how little you understand where your anger comes from and the fact that your loved ones can’t seem to handle when you’re trying to vent. Your family and friends have learned to avoid you when they can sense you’re angry, and this is happening more often.

You’re not quite sure if your anger is something to get help for, but you know there’s something going on beneath the surface. You just don’t know exactly how to tell what that is. You know you don’t want your anger to drive away everyone you care about.

Who Benefits Most from Anger Management

Anger Management is best for those who understand that their negative reactions to the events in their life are impacting their relationships. Anger Management helps you understand whatever is underneath your angry emotions and start healing the root cause.

You will benefit from counseling for your anger if:

  • Your relationships are strained and the people you love walk on eggshells around you
  • You often take your frustrations out physically because you have trouble expressing yourself
  • Your anger is causing you to have physiological symptoms like high blood pressure, fatigue, or body aches
  • You hardly recognize yourself or the path your life has taken, and you want to be happy again
  • You want to be able to experience and express a wide range of emotions in a healthy way

There are certain situations where you might not be ready for Anger Management Counseling sessions with Urban Wellness. These situations include, but are not limited to:

  • Instances of severe mental illness
  • Ongoing substance abuse

What The Anger Management Process Looks Like

Anger Management is intended to help you develop an anger plan, so you know how to cope and respond when you start to feel angry. Together, you and your therapist will strive to reduce your anger, frustration, and isolation and improve your ability to relate to others. You will discover ways to cope when you are feeling moved by strong emotions.

You and your therapist will meet together weekly for 55-minute sessions. Therapy is best done with at least an 8-week commitment. We find that clients who cannot commit to at least 8 weekly sessions and meet less than weekly tend to have more difficulty in establishing a relationship with their therapist and often spend their sessions recapping the previous weeks instead of focusing on forward movement. After 8 weekly sessions, you and your therapist can discuss the movement toward your treatment goals and whether reducing sessions to biweekly or terminating therapy is the next step.

Here’s what to expect:

WEEK ONE: Intake

During this initial session, you will meet with your therapist to define the counseling relationship and discuss the details of informed consent. Your therapist will gather information about you and your biological, psychological, and social history and how this is impacting your current situation. You will also discuss the goals you have going forward together.

WEEK TWO and Beyond: Anger Management

Together, in each subsequent session, you and your counselor will use evidenced-based therapy to treat the emotional flares you are experiencing because of your unaddressed anger.

Each session is designed to discover how your anger issues are impacting your health (mental and physical), happiness, and relationships. Together, you and your counselor will work to gain insight into your patterns with anger, so you can begin to break them and rebuild healthier ones.

Therapists at Urban Wellness focus on providing a safe space for you to process and discuss whatever it is that makes you frustrated and furious. With their help, you can learn skills to help you understand and work through your anger.

TERMINATION: 1-2 Final Sessions

In your final sessions, you will review your goals to ensure you are satisfied with your counseling experience and that the work with your therapist has met your expectations. You will also outline a plan going forward so that you are able to retain what you and your counselor have worked on together and implement all you have learned outside of session.

What Will I Pay for Anger Management Counseling

Anger Management Counseling is a fee for service program and Urban Wellness accepts all major forms of payment.

Initial sessions cost $170 and each follow-up session costs $145 and we recommend at least an 8-week commitment.

Urban Wellness accepts insurance and offers in network and out of network benefits. We accept BCBS PPO, Humana, and United Healthcare insurances, at their contracted rates. For your convenience, we will do a benefit check on your behalf and notify you of our in network or out of network benefits. Copays, deductibles or any out of pocket costs are due at the time of service.

Your Next Steps

It is completely possible to be mad at someone or something without your anger completely taking over your life. You will be able to talk with the people you love about the things that irritate or frustrate you without losing your cool or blowing up. You will be able to diffuse situations quickly that otherwise would have stuck with you for days or weeks.

There are likely bigger things that are causing you to be so angry, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get to the bottom of them and start seeing real change.

You will have the coping skills to recognize the signs of your anger and to keep it from spilling out into your life. You’ll be able to communicate in a way that does not alienate you from others or drive them away.
